Session Engagement Analysis

  • 1.  Session Engagement Analysis

    Posted 10-03-2016 12:12 PM

Introduction: Digital Analytics has evolved far beyond the early days of the web where Pageviews were king.  As such, metrics such as "average pages per session" and analysis around them need to evolve.  This recipe is for deeper analysis of engagement using a multi-factor approach, not just a single-factor approach such as Pageviews or Session Duration.

Analysis Overview:  The goal of this analysis process is to identify sessions which are highly engaged in interaction with a modern website or mobile application using multiple factors of interaction measurement.  By relying on more than one data signal, a clearer picture of sessions that have high engagement can be gained.  With these sessions in focus, understanding what commonalities are present in attributes such as traffic source, content viewed, and session outcomes can be determined.

    Analysis Benefits:

    1. Multi-factor engagement analysis avoids the biases inherent to relying on a single metric
    2. Clearly understand attributes of sessions that are fully engaged to better identify what traffic sources, content, and other factors are most relevant to attracting and retaining highly engaged sessions
